Special Announcement of the Central Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party

The Central Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, the National Assembly, the Government of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, the Central Committee of the Lao Front for National Construction, and the Phomvihane family, with profound sorrow, hereby announce to all compatriots across the nation, cadres, party members, officers and soldiers of the armed forces, public security personnel, as well as friends near and far at home and abroad:

Comrade Saysomphone Phomvihane, President of the National Assembly of the Lao People's Democratic Republic and Member of the Political Bureau of the Party Central Committee, passed away unfortunately at 11:38 on August 8, 2026, due to a sudden severe cerebrovascular disease, at the age of 70.

Comrade Saysomphone Phomvihane was one of the core leading figures of the Party Central Committee. He was erudite, highly capable, sharp-witted, and possessed extensive experience in leadership positions at local levels and in various sectors. He was an outstanding leader who devoted his wisdom and strength throughout his life to the cause of the Party and the revolution, to national development, and to the well-being of all ethnic groups of the Lao people.

The passing of Comrade Saysomphone Phomvihane is a tremendous loss to the Party, the State, and the people of all ethnic groups.

At this time of grief and deep mourning, the entire Party, the entire State, the entire armed forces, all cadres, party members, and all Lao people across the nation should turn their sorrow into strength, unite firmly around the Party Central Committee, carry forward the glorious traditions of the nation and the Party, resolutely deepen the Party's renovation policy, continue to perfect the people's democratic regime, and advance toward the socialist goal.

In recognition of Comrade Saysomphone Phomvihane's merits and to express our profound condolences, the Party Central Committee, the National Assembly, the Government, and the Central Committee of the Lao Front for National Construction have decided to hold a national mourning period from August 9 to August 13, 2026 (five days) at the National Convention Centre. The official funeral ceremony will be held on August 13, 2026, at the National Square.
